Sailors Grave Bach
Status: Schematic Design
The client sought to build a holiday bach from which she could enjoy the tranquillity of the Coromandel bushland, just minutes away from the local beach.
The scheme explores the idea of two separate pavilions, one for living and entertaining, the other for sleeping, connected by a covered breezeway that leads from an east-facing deck to a larger west facing deck with a pergola and built-in outdoor fireplace.
Each pavilion features a skillion roof with raking ceilings. The angles of these roofs are set perpendicularly to one another, creating a dialogue between the two units, with the tallest end wall of each pavilion enclosing the external living area, the heart of the home.
The bedroom wing features two separate bedrooms with an economically designed amenities area. The rooms’ walls and ceilings are lined with a light-finish plywood. Timber floorboards, windows and doors complete this internal aesthetic, which is set in strong contrast to the black stained timber slat facade externally.
The western courtyard is bounded by a masonry fire place and allows the owner to enjoy this space through all seasons of the year.
