The renovation of this inner-city suburb house took a formerly neglected free-standing villa and transformed it into a beautiful four-bedroom family home with grace and character.

The front façade underwent a major restoration, resulting in a stunning Victorian heritage style street frontage with Federation block cladding, new timber windows, Jarrah decking, cast iron lacework, and immaculate landscaping.
Internally, low ceilings were removed to reveal the original 3.6 metre high ceilings above, which were enhanced with decorative ceiling roses and a new lighting scheme. The kitchen was replaced with new joinery with ample bench space, and a new opening created to link this space with the adjoining living room.
Barkly Street House
- Phase 2
Status: Schematic Design
Phase 2 shows the design that has been developed for future renovations to the home. This would see a major reconfiguration and refurbishment of the rear half of the home, along with a small addition at the first-floor level.
The scheme involves removing the north-facing facade and replacing this with a wall of sliding glass doors and an external pergola for ample sun screening.
The new kitchen faces back towards the living and dining areas. A window seat along the northern wall of the living area opens up to the garden via a large tilt-up window. The dining area is contained within a booth-like zone set against a small garden courtyard.
The amenities areas are contained together in the centre of the floor plan. The laundry and butler's pantry are discretely contained at the rear of the kitchen, tucked under the new stairwell. The fourth bedroom is situated at first floor level, along with a generous study / home office area for up to two people.
Materials adopted in this scheme include white brick and exposed timber structural elements, articulated in clean forms and with an honesty of materiality.
